San Gimignano, the city of towers, is a Tuscan gem. On a clear day we could see San Gimignano from our home town of Tavernelle and we were constantly drawn towards it. We visited it numerous times and never got tired of exploring its narrow streets. Even though only fourteen of the original seventy two towers are left, they are still amazing to see.
Volterra lies to the west of San Gimignano and to reach it you practically drive up a mountain. That means the views are breathtaking and go on forever. We found a Roman ampitheatre and an alabaster workshop.
Another hilltop highlight was Colle de Val d'Elsa. We could go for a drive each day and find a different city with a view.
