Dolomite Dream

There are areas of the world that are unique and demand our attention. The Dolomites are one of a kind mountains in the Tyrol region of northern Italy. There are mountains all over this area but these particular mountains stand out because of their imposing shape. To drive through them means climbing endless switchbacks to finally reach beautiful alpine villages with the Dolomites looming above them. Then we had to keep on driving even higher to the top of the mountain passes where we found ski runs at incredible altitudes. We spent two days crossing different passes in the Dolomites. First we conquered the Sella Pass by Val Gardena and then the Rolle Pass by San Martino di Castrozza. We couldn't stop gazing in wonder at the awe inspiring panoramas all around us.

Another highlight of our visit to Tyrol was getting to know this corner of Italy.  Actually the locals wouldn't even consider this to be Italy. They are proud Austrians who just happen to live across an imaginary line drawn by people who don't know any better. Our hosts live in a gorgeous home surrounded by vineyards in the quaint town of St. Paul near Bolzano. We really enjoyed our stay with Norbert and Christa and would encourage anyone interested in exploring this incredible region to stay with them (this is an unpaid ad). Are we ever glad we stopped in on our way from Bellagio to Venice.
