When in Rome ... Stay in Trastevere

On our first visit to Rome we stayed near Termini (the train station) but this time we wanted to stay in a cozier neighbourhood so we could feel more 'local'. Trastevere is on the southwest side of the Tiber River across from the Colosseum and the other famous sights of central Rome. It is a neighbourhood of narrow streets, tiny shops, restaurants, and about a gazillion bakeries and coffee bars. We really enjoyed wandering through these streets each day as we set out to see the sights. Coming back at the end of each day to our neighbourhood felt like coming home. From the playground on the corner to the English bookstore tucked down an alley to the graffiti decorated walls to the two hundred year old cheese shop (the shop was two hundred, not the cheese), it was a comfortable neighbourhood to live in. There was always something to watch as people went about their daily routines. We especially enjoyed following the slow and steady progress of the construction workers who were rebuilding the cobblestone streets one stone at a time.
