Vatican City is the smallest country in the world but it has the most amazing collection of architecture and artifacts. It also is home to Pope Francis who we got to 'meet' when he had his weekly audience. It was fascinating to watch the way people reacted to him. There were rows of newly married couples in their full wedding gear waiting to be blessed and mothers holding up newborns.
We spent a whole day visiting the incredible Vatican Museum which houses endless collections of sculptures, tapestries, and paintings. Of course the culmination is the Sistene Chapel with Michelangelo's masterpieces. Words can not adequately describe the beauty of his work. It is easy to see why many believe he was the greatest and most important artist of all time.
St. Peter's Cathedral is the largest church in the world and is almost too much to take in. The amount of marble and gold that was used to decorate the interior is staggering. Michelangelo's Pieta as well as his decorating of the dome are further evidence of his incredible talent.
Climbing up to the top of St. Peter's gave us a great view over the Eternal City. It was a fitting climax to our time in Rome.
