Where Fjords Meet the Mediterranean

South of Dubrovnik in the country of Montenegro lies the incredibly beautiful Bay of Kotor. It looks like a fjord but is actually a submerged river valley called a ria but we'll call it a fjord anyway. It is surrounded by walls of mountains and after driving forever around the neverending shoreline, we found the picturesque town of Kotor. This whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is easy to see why. The Stari Grad (Old Town) is very quaint but what is more impressive is the San Giovanni Fortress above it. It's a breathtaking hike (views come complete with a workout) past Our Lady of the Redeemer church to the top but you feel like you can see forever. Kotor is slowly becoming more touristy as the Dubrovnik crowd looks for more sights to see along the coast but we found it still to be a quiet gem and the perfect day trip from our home in Dubrovnik.
