Along the route south from Bordeaux to the Mediterranean Sea lies the hilltop city of Carcassonne with its medieval citadel, La Cite. It dates back to the Roman times but has been rebuilt many times. It is more fascinating from the outside since the interior is full of souvenir shops, hotels, and restaurants. It was a good hour break from driving and then we continued our trip to Provence.
