The sunny land of Scotland has been very good to us. The old joke 'There are two kinds of weather in Scotland - it's raining or it's about to rain' has not been our experience. We consider ourselves very fortunate since it allowed us to see this amazing country in all its glory. We started off with a couple of days in Inverness - Gateway to the Highlands. The city itself has the Inverness Castle overlooking it but it is used mainly as the starting point for trips into the nearby Highlands. Inverness sits at the top end of the infamous Loch Ness but there is nothing that special about it other than it is a long lake with the beautiful Urquhart Castle along it's west shore.
The Isle of Skye was our most amazing (and longest) day so far. We drove through the Western Highlands to reach the island and then we spent the day driving around it on the narrow one lane roads. The sad thing is that this beautiful corner of the world has been discovered in a really big way and so any visit requires lots of patience and nail biting courage as tour buses try to pass cars on the single track and every pull out to take a picture becomes quite an adventure (and not of the positive kind). This was aided by the construction of a bridge which connects the island to the mainland and allows everybody to just drive on to enjoy its beauty. The main town of Portree was Banff on steroids with massive buses trying to squeeze through the narrow one lane streets. Nevertheless, with the help of gorgeous sunshine, we saw some of the most beautiful shoreline anywhere. We also stopped in at a number of castles - Eilean Donan on the way to the Isle (one of those must pics) and Dunvegan Castle on the Isle. We do realize that we will be 'castled out' soon but for now they are impressive.
